Introduction

Living a sedentary lifestyle has become a significant public health issue and it has not just become a worldwide worry but has been linked to a lot of medical complications. 

In the workplace currently, a Sedentary lifestyle is a common phenomenon as employees are confined to sitting in their workspaces all day long. A Sedentary lifestyle is one that involves less physical activity or no one at all. Therefore, one who always engages in activities that revolve around being in one spot or sitting or lying down all day could be said to be showing signs of sedentary behavior. According to research, about 20 percent of adults have tried to meet up the standard of engaging in physical activities.

There are adverse effects of living a sedentary lifestyle. And these effects can lead to serious complications or even death.

Signs That You Are Not Physically Active Enough

# 1. You Are Suffering From Obesity

Sitting and being fixated in one spot could result in burning fewer calories. And burning less calories means gaining more weight. Too much weight can lead to severe complications like inability to move freely, bad posture and diabetes. Your BMI (Body Mass Index) is a common way to check if your body weight is okay or not. BMI that amounts to more than 30 is a sign of obesity.

# 2. You Have High Blood Pressure

An unhealthy increase in the blood could arise due to a lack of significant physical inactivity.  Being sedentary can put your body in a state of imbalance which might cause the blood pressure around your artery walls to be very much intense.

If you notice symptoms like shortness of breath, consistent headaches, dizziness, and chest pain, then it just might be a case of hypertension.

# 3. You Feel Lazy Always

Lack of strength and threshold for endurance. No stamina and disposition to engage in activities that do not require sitting down. Although it is normal to feel this way once in a while, when it becomes a constant feeling of wanting to not indulge in any form of activity, then it is a sign that you have not been physically active enough.

The valves are responsible for regulating the flow of blood in and out of the heart. Once the valves are faulty, it is a heart issue

This is an abnormal heart condition that affects  the arteries

This affects the contraction of the heart’s muscles.

  • Arrhythmias

This affects the electrical conduction of the heart. The heart is made up of electricity too. This condition is also called heart rhythm disturbance.

  • Heart Infections.

This is a very rare heart condition that always happens before birth. It arises as a result of the deficiency in the formation of the heart.

Generally, heart diseases can be caused by  lack of physical inactivity as it increases cholesterol in the body to a very high level; hence cholesterol begins to build up massively around the heart areas.

# 5. You Lack Flexibility

If flexibility becomes a big deal for you, then it might just be as a result of inadequate physical activity.  Being inactive could cause your joints to become stiff and hard to move. Stiffness in the joints can lead to weariness and general body aches.

# 6. You Have A Lower Metabolism

Having a high metabolism is crucial for staying fit and being healthy. Hence a lower metabolism is unhealthy for you as it can lead to building up of cholesterol in your body.  Being inactive can slow down your body’s metabolism and can lead to being unhealthy .

Being physically inactive can increase the chances of depression especially in adults. This is because lack of engagement could make the mind wander, and when this happens, the brain becomes actively responsible for releasing limited amounts of Serotonin. Serotonin is a happy hormone released by the brain. It helps to regulate our moods and gives us feelings of joy and excitement.

Six Ways To Fix A Sedentary Lifestyle

Every solution that is connected to fixing a sedentary lifestyle revolves around being physically engaged. According to research, physical activity can reduce the chances of heart diseases and untimely death. Here are some physical activities you can engage in to fix a sedentary lifestyle.

Take Walks

You can take walks around the block. They would make you fit and active. A fifteen-minute walk each day would suffice.

Use The Stairs Instead Of Lifts

As a means to charge up your body system, take the flight of stairs and discard the elevator. You can do this early in the mornings at the start of your day and later in the day after the closing of business.  Do not get used to taking lifts always.

Take Walks During Your Lunch Hour

You can take brief walks during lunch breaks. This is because you must have spent about four hours before lunch break sitting at your desk, and would likely spend another four hours at your workspace after the lunch break. So the perfect opportunity to stretch your body is during your lunch hour. You can take brief walks around the office and back to your workstation.

Walk Around While Taking Phone Calls

Make sure you are not taking phone calls while sitting down. Taking calls is a perfect excuse to stand up and walkabout. It helps in releasing tension already built up in the body system. Walk around slowly while making calls and swing any of your arms alongside if possible.

Do Your Chores Regularly

Do not procrastinate your chores or assign them to someone else. Do them yourself and let your chores be a way of engaging your body in some forms of activity. To make chores more engaging and less boring, you could listen to music while doing them or discuss with a friend or housemate. 

Exercise Regularly

Hit the gym once or twice every week. However, if you are not a gym lover, you could do some exercises at home. Exercises lower your risk of having health complications because they put the body to work. In addition, regular exercising would regulate the cholesterol in your body and would balance your blood sugar.
