- Why do you need to have a perfect résumé summary?
For job applicants, you might have asked this question occasionally; “What should a perfect résumé summary look like?”
First, a résumé summary is a professional statement at the top of your resume. It is a 5 line expression of thought that seeks to tell the hiring manager about your skills, experience, and achievement before going into the main content of the resume.
The importance of this is that it gives the hiring manager insights into your career path and your achievements. Invariably from the first 5 lines of your resume, the employer is certain whether you are qualified or not. Hence the reason you have to write your résumé summary as accurately as possible.
For a résumé summary there are three basic things that should be inclutraits;

How To Write A Résumé Summary
1. Talk About Your Dominant Personality Traits In A Few Words
Mention things like ‘Experienced’, ‘Analytical’, ‘Critical’, ‘Passionate’ etc. However, do not brag or blow your trumpet in the bid to project your professional qualities. Do not use soft adjectives like (very good HR Analyst, the best Sales Representative, etc). They could create a wrong impression. Use professional words or adjectives in relaying your dominant traits.
2. Mention Your Current Job And Professional Experience
Indicate your current professional experience in your statement and if possible indicate the number of years spent in garnering that experience. This would help the hiring manager evaluate your capability and level of experience.
3. Indicate How You Will Be Of Help In Achieving The Goals Of The Company
Now you have to be meticulous about this. The hiring manager would want to know how you can impact the organization with your skills and qualifications; however, you should put it out there to the hiring manager that your ultimate goal is to create a positive impact on the organization. So instead of saying “I can impact an organization by increasing sales drive and converting clients to paying clients”, you could say ” my overall goal is to achieve an increase in sales drive; hereby converting target audience into paying clients”.
4. Add Your key Achievements
Do this in order to demonstrate that you have hands-on experience. Highlight your top achievements in your field. This would let the hiring manager know that you have good knowledge and mastery in your field.
5. Your Professional Summary Should Not Be More Than 5 Lines
If well written, five lines could perfectly capture important information about your profession. Writing more than four to five lines could bore your employer, and could be a repetition of what already lies in your resume.
6. Tailor Your Resume Summary To Meet Specific Job Offers
Your résumé summary should align with the job role at all times. Do not use a professional summary that doesn’t fit into the requirements of the job offer.

Eg: Certified, Professional, Critical, Passionate etc
- [Job title]:
Eg: Business Development Manager
- [Year of experience]:
Eg: With 2 years experience
- [What goal are you set to achieve]:
Eg: ultimate goal is to achieve maximum sales drive by converting target audience to paying clients through strategic planning and awareness
- [Your key achievements]:
Eg: led a sales drive that yielded about 45% profit above company average.
This formula can help you in building your personal resume summary. Remember to always tailor it according to specific jobs.
Remember to be straightforward while writing. Too many stories and long sentences would have no impact on your reader.
Why do you need to have a perfect résumé summary?
In order to save time amidst the influx of job applications, hiring managers use software called ATS to screen résumés.
How does the ATS work?
It looks for specific keywords relating to the job in your résumé and juxtaposes them with the job requirements. Hence, if keywords relating to the job can’t be found in your résumé then it would be rejected.
This is why it is important that you fill in the right keywords right from your résumé summary till the very end of your résumé. To achieve this, you have to tailor your résumé to each job offer and the employer’s specific requirements. Then take note of the keywords and use them properly when writing your résumé summary.
